About Us
When George and Marie Pichlik came to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1968, they wanted to continue their careers in the food industry. They came to what used to be the quaint community of Queen West Toronto, and they purchased a business from Mr. J. Rousal. On top of the storefront was their home, and to this day the family continues to live and work at 638 Queen Street West.
Soon after they opened the business, their son Walter and his wife Kveta moved to Canada and joined them. The store took on the name "Prague Meat Products", and specialized in fresh meats and sausages.
Due to a large influx of Czech and Slovak immigration in 1968, the business was overwhelmed with customers looking for "a taste from home". To please the customers, we started adding new products, including home cooked meals. This was the birth of our famous dumplings, soups and gourmet schnitzels.
When George's daughter Eliska left Prague in 1982, she joined the family business as well. She was an excellent baker and helped introduce our specialty pastries and baked goods. It was around this time that we decided to change our name to "Prague Deli" to better reflect the products we were offering.
As the neighbourhood changed, so did Prague Deli. With more and more businesses prospering around us, we started offering gourmet deli sandwiches, which are still a very popular Queen West lunch option to this day
George and Marie Pichlik retired in 1990, and after 36 years in business, Walter and Kveta Kral are ready to retire as well. Prague Deli is now being passed on to its third generation of eager family members, Tom Kral and Helen Ninavaie. Tom and Helen have lived and breathed the Prague Deli since they were born, and it is a huge part of who they are. Tom is a certified Red Seal Chef with experience in many of the city's finest restaurants. He will take on the title of Executive Chef and hopes to reach many new customers by refreshing the restaurant. Helen has worked the front counter at the deli for over 10 years and will serve customers with knowledge and experience.
Prague Deli is now taking on the name "Prague". This is not to suggest that we will no longer offer our well-known deli products, but it opens up a whole new opportunity to focus on being a restaurant as well. We have renovated the business to include new seating and will offer our customers the option of having full table service while they dine. Our goal is to please our regular customers, and to entice new people to experience the flavours of Prague.
One thing The Prague will always have is hearty home cooked meals at an honest price. We are proud of our solid reputation and plan to impress our community even more in the coming years.
